I was born in Corry, Pa. in 1934, and am a direct descendant of Pieter Claessen Wyckoff who was indentured in Rensselaerswyck in 1637, and married Grietje Van Ness to raise a large family in Brooklyn. My father, Milton, and paternal grandfather, Jesse, were raised in Crawford Co., Pa. William Wyckoff, b. 1767, migrated from Hunterdon Co. N.J. to Woodcock Township, Crawford Co., Pa. He bought land from the Holland Land Co. in 1803 and moved to Blooming Valley, Crawford Co., Pa. in 1809. My father was the first in my family to graduate from high school; I was the first to graduate from college. I attended Penn State on the G.I. Bill, majoring in economics, and earned my Ph.D. at Cornell in linguistic anthropology. I taught physical and cultural anthropology at Oberlin College, and several other subjects at Cornell where I retired from the Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. In 2014, I published "What's in a Name? History and Meaning of Wyckoff" where I take genealogists to task for ignoring the information contained in a surname.
